OCTOBER 2006 NEWSLETTER

I can't believe it's already fall! Where did the summer go? Had a lovely one here. While my daughter was in camp, my husband and I spent a week in Mystic, Ct. Fabulous place -- they have a wonderful seaport museum -- complete with ships and houses from the whaling era. Lots to do and learn. We were both fascinated. Knew nothing about whaling -- so that was interesting as well as all the things we learned about the sailing ships. Even got to hoist a sail. Definitely not good for the hands. Gloves are a must! They also have a fabulous aquarium. And as a part of that, an institute started by the man who originally found the wreck of the Titanic. Lots of information about his recovery work. Currently he's working on a Phoenician ship lost in the Black Sea. Really cool stuff!

We also went to the Thimble Islands. Very cool. Little islands -- some just rocks -- that jut out of the water off the Connecticut coastline. All the islands have houses or a single house on them -- many dating back to Victorian times. The tour was great. And my thanks go out to the reader who recommended it! We had a wonderful time.

Then in August we spent a week at Lake George. Drop dead gorgeous scenery -- the perfect place to kick back and relax. Rented a boat and spent a lot of time just cruising. Although my daughter and her friends had a better time riding the inner tube behind the boat.

The rest of the summer was spent enjoying New York. The city is quieter in the summer --at least in the non-touristy areas. We did have a week of sweltering heat. In fact, spent one night an Irish Pub's quiz night -- sweating to the trivia. No A/C -- not a good idea. Still had a lot of fun and wasn't to bad at getting the answers either. Of course I had a little help from my team-mates. Quiz nights are a great invention

Things were pretty slow on the Broadway front -- although my daughter and I did make it to RENT. I'd seen it in Austin, but as with everything Broadway the show was much better in NY. Great music and wonderful cast. We actually watched the movie (go Netflix) last night. Was very true to the play with a few small exceptions. And getting to see most of the original cast was definitely a highlight.

Looking forward to a new season. We've already got tickets for the revivals of A Chorus Line (was my first Broadway play when I came to NYC in 1977) and Les Miserables. Have seen it twice in Austin - but can't wait for the intimacy of a Broadway theatre. Also have tickets to Cameron Macintosh's Mary Poppins. Love the books. And of course the Julie Andrews movie. So should be a lot of fun. Other interesting options are Gray Gardens, Legally Blonde (yes, it's going to be a musical) and a Noel Coward play whose name totally escapes me.

Hoping all of you are settling in for a crisp cool autumn. Halloween is just around the corner -- and before we know it the rest of the holiday season will be here.

In writing news the anthology I did with my friends Kathleen O'Reilly and Julie Kenner should be hitting bookstores this week. Check out the website for an excerpt.

Here's a teaser:

What happens when a devil meets an angel? All hell breaks loose.

Jack, Nick and Marcus: three illegitimate sons of the devil. They were the baddest of the bad boys, each of whom had managed to make love, raise hell, and milk life in a manner worthy of their heritage. Until the day Daddy dearest needs to name his heir apparent. So who will the next ruler of Sin City be?

And coming next June: Watch for the sequel -- Hell on Heels -- seems the devil has daughters...

In April, my first women's fiction novel is being released. A Match Made on Madison is the story of a matchmaker, a no holds barred bet, and the unwelcome fact that sometimes love has a mind of its own.

And finally -- whew! -- my newest Romantic Suspense - Chain Reaction is coming out next June! Something awful happened in Cedar Branch, ID -- and Mia Kearney has to find the truth before the killers find her. Check out my website to find out more...

On the reading front had a fabulous summer. Stand out books include. Reread Potent Pleasures -- Eloisa James is such a fabulous writer. Great fun. Also read My Lady's Dare by the wonderful Gayle Wilson. This book was given to me by a friend, and it was a great recommendation. Cried and cheered and smiled. Wonderful book. In addition I read Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin -- Great Read! This is one of those books that pulls you in and when it's over you're so disappointed -- fortunately -- there are sequels! Read Breakdown Lane by Jacquelyn Mitchard (The Deep End of the Ocean) An engrossing read that I literally couldn't put down. Also on the list: Sex and the Single Girl by Lani Diane Rich -- great fun -- perfect vacation read. Admissions by Nancy Lieberman, an interesting foray into the world of private schools in Manhattan. Triangle by Davis Von Drehle -- the story of the tragic turn of the century fire that changed labor forever. Non-fiction but absolutely enthralling. And Paris Hangover by Kirsten Lobe who took me to Paris and made me want croissants and a Frenchman.

Next up The Devil and the Junior League by Linda Francis Lee. Another auto buy. And a book I'm really looking forward to reading.
